A Retrospective Study: Teenage Pregnancy and Abortion in Kamuli, Mayuge and Wakiso Districts in Uganda

We are determined to generate more local evidence that can support advocacy towards addressing the sexual and reproductive health challenges of adolescents and young people in the country.

With support from Planned Parenthood Global (PPG) and the WPF, we finalised our Retrospective study on teenage pregnancy and abortion in three districts with high rates of teenage pregnancy (Kamuli, Mayuge and Wakiso). The study assessed deliveries of mothers in 6 health centre IVs across the three districts, covering four 6 months time periods between October 2019 and June 2023 (pre, during and post Covid-19 time).

It also assessed post abortion care (PAC) services provided to mothers in 4 of the 6 health centres which had documented information on PAC. The study reveals that 28% (3,685) of the 13,162 deliveries within the time period assessed were adolescent girls aged 10 to 19 years. It further found that 46% (314) of the 683 women who received PAC services were adolescents. This study further documents the causes of teenage pregnancy and abortion in the three districts, experiences of teenage pregnancy, barriers towards returning to school after teen pregnancy and makes recommendations and actions for key stakeholders.

We are using the findings to advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights of adolescent girls and young women in Uganda.
