CEHURD working through the Coalition to Stop Maternal Mortality due to Unsafe Abortion (CSMMUA) convened a meeting on Wednesday 19th April, 2017 at the Metropole Hotel in Kampala. This meeting among others was intended to give an opportunity for learning and sharing with their counterparts the Coalition to Address Maternal Mortality due to Unsafe Abortion and its Complications (CAMMAC) from Tanzania.

The aim of the meeting was to acquaint the two organizations with the work they do to support and advocate for efforts to prevent or reduce maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion in both Uganda and Tanzania.

The meeting involved participants from several organizations both in Uganda and Tanzania that came together to form the two coalitions. The organizations included CEHURD, HRAPF, RECESVID, RAHU, GCOWAU, AOGU, Marie Stopes Uganda, LAW-Uganda, WACOA, HEPS-Uganda, Women’s Link World Wide, WSA, Ipas Africa Alliance Uganda office and AWAC from Uganda, and Pathfinder-Tanzania, UMATI, TAHECAP and TAWLA from Tanzania.

Discussions in the meeting included an overview of CSMMUA’s membership, strategic objectives, challenges, and next steps; an overview of CAMMAC’s membership, strategic objectives, challenges, and next steps; the key advocacy opportunities and process to leverage including: EAC SRHR Bill, Constitutional Petition No. 10 of 2017, Miscellaneous Application No.309/2016, Reinstatement of the S&Gs, The Global Gag Rule, and others shared by members; Emerging issues and immediate follow up for CSMMUA included exploring which individuals/organizations are missing from CSMMUA and how we can improve the way of work as a coalition.
